No. We can only use Bulgarian in class but we find it unnecessarily frustrating for the first courses and for some students who need to have more clarity and support. Of course, our goal is to expose our students to natural Bulgarian as much as possible. We use English in the classroom and whenever the teacher of an individual student knows their native language, she can use it to explain, compare or distinguish certain language aspects.
Yes, but only a little! We encourage our students to really take ownership of their learning and progress. The tasks we give as homework could be more passive and traditional, more creative and stimulating and whenever possible, we ask our students to do a certain task in Bulgarian, such as doing their shopping or talking to a neighbor, outside the classes. We know our courses are efficient but we are well aware that they are not enough for our students to fully master the language. Languages require A LOT of practice.
We are currently developing our own coursebooks for teaching Bulgarian as a foreign language. The same goes for almost all materials we provide for our learners – video and audio exercises, extra reading tasks, charts, presentations, etc.
Good question. The answer will be different for every student because there are a lot of factors involved: your learning style, your motivation, your effort outside the classroom, your previous experience learning a foreign language. Please note that your age is not a relevant factor for your success. With the right attitude and guidance, you will learn Bulgarian!
Our courses focus on speaking a lot so you can expect to be involved in basic conversations in week 1 of your complete beginner’s course.
Edno School offers 3 types of courses based on the place they are held: online, face-to-face and blended (online courses with offline speaking tasks).
There are also 3 types of courses based on frequency: regular courses (10 weeks, 2 classes per week), intensive courses (1, 2, 3 or 4 weeks, with classes 4 or 5 days per week) and individual lessons (the student can make their own timetable).
Each lesson has a similar structure and we apply the same principles when planning and delivering your classes. You can find out more about this in the methodology section.
Please read through the detailed descriptions of each course here. Should you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask us.
Our general class size is 4 – 8 students. Some conversational or project-based courses and workshops may allow more participants.
Yes. If you have successfully completed your course (that is 60% on the final test and 80% attendance), you get your certificate. However, the certificates Edno School issues are not nationally recognized.
Only one formal test at the end of your course.
With online classes, you can sometimes get a recording of the lesson you missed; for both online and offline courses you can join another group to make up for what you missed. If you miss two or more consecutive lessons, you can have an individual session with your teacher so you can go through the material.
